The Requirements
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:- A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or significant relevant experience

- A working knowledge of Operating Systems (Windows 2003, 2008) and Operating Systems Administration (Powershell, VBScripting, WMI, Registry Manipulation, AD, LDAP, NTFS, etc.)
- A working knowledge of Database Platforms (MSSQL 2005, 2008, 2012) and Database Scripts (SQL)
- A working knowledge of Server Applications (IIS, Sharepoint, Biztalk, JBOSS)
- The ability to install and configure various operating systems, databases, and applications, particularly MS Windows, MS SQL, and supporting utilities
- The ability to work independently and provide leadership to other members of the team
- Excellent technical skills including problem solving abilities
- An exceptional orientation to detail, with strong organizational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to be flexible and work weekend hours or be on call during windows of deployment as needed

The Role
You will join the Release Management team with five other employees, but you will be one of just two with the skill-set in both XML and PowerShell. As a programmer, you’ll get direction from the developers and release leads to keep the deployment tool up to date, though once you’ve been trained on what to do you’ll mostly be on your own to get it done.A big part of your role will be using your strong skill in visual programming (XML) to automate operational tasks, such as software installation. You’ll provide strategic oversight for deployment automation and for the utilization of various systems and tools, including researching and dealing with any of the problems associated with software deployment automation.
Most of your time will be spent working by email, over the phone, and in person, with developers and release leads, programming using the Nolio tool, troubleshooting, and coordinating and completing deployments. Though you’ll report to our Herndon office, you may have the chance to work from home occasionally or to work a flexible schedule, at your manager’s discretion.
Some of your specific responsibilities may be to:
- Design, program, and implement application/software release automation, using tools such as Nolio ARA.
- Design and implement software deployment automation projects, including developing, defining, and delivering project timelines and milestones in a timely manner.
- Perform manual installation of software and work with developers on troubleshooting and documentation.
- Work with other department/unit developers and maintain disaster recovery plans for key critical systems and servers.
- Install, configure, maintain, and repair specialized systems/applications and provide system support in a networked environment.
- Interact with other departments/units for troubleshooting and knowledge sharing.
- Research, specify, and recommend specific software deployment automation for the department.
- Participate and execute rollouts/deployments, migrations and upgrades as part of the IT team.
- Review, escalate, resolve, and close various tickets.
- Work flexible hours, carry a duty pager, rotate through ON-CALL shift, and respond to system outages in a timely manner.
- Automate system administration tasks such as server inventory control, file system maintenance, and server service control using script technologies.
- Maintain inventory of software licenses and manage annual renewal of maintenance contracts.
- Complete ongoing performance tuning and resource optimization as required.
- Mentor, train, and supervise other team members.

Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will need to combine your systems administration and visual programming ability with your creative side to find ways to automate manual tasks. You’ll also need to have troubleshooting skills at the programming or network level so that if something doesn’t work you can figure out why. This is a fast-paced environment, so you’ll need to be able to adapt to change and roll with last-minute urgent requests.You’ll be working with cross-functional teams, and it will take collaboration to complete your tasks, so if you prefer to stay in your cubicle alone all day, this is not the role for you. Instead, it will take someone who is outgoing enough to work well with many different people. You’ll also need to be flexible enough to stay until deployments are complete and your follow up is done.
